Spongetastic, After Stanley Spencer

The art of Stanley Spencer exhibited in Sandham Memorial Chapel at Burghclere, near Newbury, came to mind when I cropped a significantly larger picture of a charity car wash and revealed this detail.

Nikon D2Xs - Teleconverter TC-16A - Nikkor-H Auto 300mm f/4.5 from 1971. A combined focal length of 720mm. Quite good for wildlife photography but a bit too powerful for candids.

Pure chance.
Using an old Canon EF 35-135mm f/4-5.6 USM lens from the early days of the EOS system when film reigned supreme. On an EOS 40D it behaves like a 50-200mm (to be precise, 56-216mm), a standard lens with great telephoto capability. It was at full stretch here.

Nikon D2Xs + Nikkor 135mm f/2.8 AI lens. 135mm translates to a field of view of 270mm on a crop sensor DX camera. This picture of laundry in a cupboard was made in poor light, as can plainly be seen from the totally dark recesses. I was forced into an ISO of 800 which whilst possible with the D2Xs, is not to be recommended from a noise point of view. Even using the lens wide open I had to reduce the shutter to a speed of 1/160th when half that would have been more sensible for a hand-held shot. I rather enjoy pushing the limits, but there is a high wastage rate. Attempting low-light photography with a dinosaur like the D2Xs demands really fast lenses, Two more stops would have been helpful here.

The dress was such a strong component in this advertisement from the 1960s that it was easy to make its occupant fade in significance via a few judicious shunts of the sliders in the processing software.

Treetop in Winter Sunset (Lightroom Edit)

This photograph dates from February, 2012. It was one of those 'let's see what happens' efforts which worked out better than anticipated. I used a Nikon D90 with an AF Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f/4-5.6G lens at full stretch (not a setting where it excels: it's performance is usually poor beyond 200mm). Aperture was f/7.1; speed 1/3200. Elsewhere I have remarked on how difficult it is to repeat a photograph due to factors like different light, forgotten camera settings, mistaken perspective; in this case it is impossible because the tree has been felled. I doubt the picture would be half as attractive without the spindly twigs silhouetted in the winter sunset.
