Distortion

I rediscovered this copy of 'She' magazine dated December, 1966. Capriciously I distorted the photograph in processing. The words are nevertheless legible. The woman in the picture (who had no function to perform in regard to the men's coat under review) now looks even more stricken by something. The magazine gave no credit to the photographer. He or she clearly knew their stuff and maybe couldn't care less about acknowledgement beyond being paid. I should like to see more examples of this photographer's work. 'She' was a British women's monthly magazine that ran for 56 years, from 1955 to September, 2011. having been relaunched in 1988 and revitalised in 2005. It was quite good but the magazine industry is cut-throat. It was unintentional, but it seems to me that the effect of distorting the image has been to make the model look a bit like Victoria Beckham, the former Posh Spice.

Heavy Welting

Fashion feature in a 1960s magazine. Photographed with a Nikon D2Xs and a Nikkor 28mm f/3.5 AI lens. Sixty years ago the photographic style seemed more confident and the creative ideas more diverse and occasionally ambiguous.

The buttons look like little eyes. It is a bit disconcerting. Nikon D2Xs + Nikkor-H Auto 300mm f/4.5 lens with a Nikon TC-16A teleconverter. Weighed a ton.

Voting versus Advertising

30 Jul 2024 5 2 75
Double exposure of a small section of a Cleo de Rosy advertisement from 1967 and a photograph of some very old ballot pencils lined up in the slats of a modern domestic heating radiator. The advertisement appeared in 'Nova' magazine in 1967. 'Voting versus Advertising' might be taken as a clash of ideas between politics and commerce, but the longer I think about it, the more I see that they are inter-dependent and entwined. It is therefore a matter of philosophy.

Freshly laundered and pressed. Nikon D2Xs and Nikkor 28mm f/2 AI lens, thus a field of view equivalent to 42mm.

We Are Shopping. We Do Other Things As Well.

A healthy diet. Keeping in trim. Household economy. Being a blonde and wearing sunglasses. Style icons in a country town. Perhaps you can speculate regarding the other things these typical shoppers enjoy or endure.

In the Countryside

Nikon D2Xs with a Nikkor AF-S DX 18-200mm lens. A moment for reflection on the Nikon D2Xs which I bought secondhand in 2011 about five years after its introduction. It had 40,000 shutter actuations then; now it has 70,000 and a good many battle scars. Ken Rockwell of the much maligned but very useful US photo equipment website remarked of the D2Xs, 'If you earn your living with your camera you'll want one of these. If you want a camera to take with you for fun, relaxation and vacation this isn't it: it's a huge, hulking beast of a pro camera.' I guess he's right but I have loved this camera from the off and am unperturbed by its weight and age. It's something of a paradox, but it's a lot simpler to use than 'entry level' digital cameras where a degree in computer science is advantageous, together with a patient temperament for inevitable cruises down the rivers of menus navigating for some way of changing a setting which on a D2Xs is possible via a knob or wheel.

Domke F-4 AF Pro

Photographed with a Nikon lens on a Canon camera. Not that this is particularly remarkable, although the adapter is a sloppy fit and thus the sharpness comes as a welcome surprise. I think the lens used was a 135mm f/2.8, but I tried several and could be mistaken. I should make notes. Recalling the all-manual film camera where my interest in photography began, I am resolutely continuing in deploying the manual setting for exposure, and I have discovered that I like many subjects to be under-exposed by some margin. I suppose exposure is like art: nothing is actually right or wrong. Perhaps I am on the threshold of developing a photographic style.
