Safeway Ice Cream Ad, c1955

11 Nov 2019 1 365
From the Eisenhower era of Family Circle. Everything you could ever want in an ad: Multiple styles of illustration! A cute square Pyrex bowl that holds a serving of refined sugar and butterfat the size of Mt. Hood! Plus, check out that "gift box" ice cream carton ("Party Pride"). On the flip-side of this page is a diet formula ad that scolds Mrs. Middle America for not helping Mr. Middle America stay slim. Ah, Madison Avenue, never ever change! (Originally posted to flickr on February 2nd, 2011.)

Pyrex Cookware Ad (2), 1963

Is it just because of the way the photo's cropped that the loaf of bread in the oven looks big enough to feed forty people?

Nothing says "prestige" like wall to wall orange carpeting. From May's issue of Good Housekeeping.

Pyrex Top-Of-Stove Ware Ad, 1936

The pot looks so angry. I'm afraid to turn my back on it. From the May issue of American Home magazine.

Why does the man in the kitchen deserve your unconditional worship? If you believe the dinner recipes inside the magazine, it's because he's heard of seasonings other than salt, pepper, and ketchup. (Though they're not in evidence up front here.) Also, whatever went wrong with Mom's teeth is not my fault. I just put this up because of my thing for toques and Pyrex. Don't judge me!! From the July Issue.

No pretty colors, but it's amusing and appalling at the same time to read what a kitchen full of everyday glassware would have run you back then. From the February issue of Ladies Home Journal.

Chemex & Pyrex Ads, 1930s-1960s

Going counter-clockwise from the left: From the May 1936 issue of American Home magazine. From the October 1945 issue of House & Garden. From the November 1960 issue of House Beautiful (enlarged to show detail). Finally, from the July 1962 issue of Everywoman's/Family Circle. That first one was originally posted to Flickr on June 11th, 2011. Since then, I've actually acquired some of those pie plates for myself, but I still haven't tried the double-up piecrust trick. I use 'em mostly for roasting vegetables.

My-T-Fine Dessert Mix Ad, 1952

19 Jun 2011 1 196
Back when I was still part of (Sir) Elton John's entourage, he and I stumbled upon this ad at a Nob Hill estate sale. Elton dreamed of employing the skirted banana motif in one of his early MTV videos. But the suits at My-T-Fine simply wouldn't co-operate. Just about broke the poor fellow's heart. From the October issue of Everywoman's magazine.

Household's Hi Speed Ad, 1957

24 Jun 2011 199
Was this photo supposed to make the "Cook Book" seem big enough for its own room? ("Freddy, be a dear and take the handtruck and bring in Mother's recipe collection. I think some nice orange-glazed pound cake after supper would be just the thing...") Also, something clearly went wrong with that stick of butter. Maybe it's transforming into a bar of soap. From the September issue of Household magazine.

Cookbook Page, 1950

I remember a short story that explained how millions of women dealt with the perpetually late-returning boyfriend/spouse by walking into the kitchen and calmly breaking a few eggs. Which is nicely poetic so far as it goes, but then again there's all that cutlery. Who's for a few bars of "Thin Line Between Love and Hate"? From Good Housekeeping's Picture Cookery.

Pyrex/Corning Christmas Ad, 1956

Rachel wonders if it's ladylike to tell her brother-in-law that the sleeve of his good suit is about to go up in flames. From the December issue of Ladies Home Journal.

Kraft Snacks 'N Appetizers, 1957

I wasn't really raised to think of processed cheese as something you served to impress guests. But who cares? It's all so damn cute! (L) Front and back covers of a promo published by Kraft Foods, Chicago, Illinois. For you Pyrex fans: googling the phrase "kraft cream cheese pyrex" will get you a link to an issue of Life magazine from 4/8/57, and a closer look at the promo glassware that Kraft was selling their cream cheese in. (R) First two pages from the booklet.

Desserts That Pack, 1952

Lovely design work here. Brought to you by Pyrex, AND The Pureed Fruit Council: Reminding you to puree wherever you work OR play! From the September issue of Everywoman's magazine.

Food Is Fun (4), c1950

17 Oct 2011 220
From the "Stuff of Nightmares" chapter: Mrs. America dreams of a vacation in which her cabin sports a fully-equipped kitchen, and she STILL has to dish out crap to the whole family every damn night. Also, more Pyrex! Ooh-wee, ooh-wee, Baby!

Food Is Fun, c1950

Mrs. America resembles a young version of the Evil Nurse from High Anxiety. Also, is that road kill sauteing in the pan? At least her other kitchenware is nicely coordinated, color-wise. Front cover of a 30--page promotional published by the American Gas Association, New York, N.Y.
