I'm pretty sure those weird scars in the rice are supposed to be poached eggs. As to what's around the rice... I don't know. Perhaps that's just as well.

I'm really unsure of the year, but a 1942-43 edition of Who's Who In California says that Bruce McDaniel (mentioned inside) became General Manager of this growers collective in 1943. So that's what I'm going with for now.
