Portland Oregon Postcard, c1935

22 Oct 2020 3 1 228
"This view shows the Portland Central Bus Depot, the Y.W.C.A., Y.M.C.A., the Journal Clock, Meier and Frank (Largest Department Store on Pacific Coast), and the shopping district in the background." It's also from before trees were invented. (And soon there won't be any more trees, so this view will be timely once more! :P ) "Angelus Commercial Studio. Portland, Oregon." The vehicles suggest that this could have been the 1930s or 40s. Enlarged to show detail.

I doubt that anything was ever cooked in this kitchen. Look at how spotless it is. Probably no human being set foot in it once it was completed, aside from the photographer. (Originally posted to flickr on February 10th, 2011.)

We had no seasonings back in those days, but we did have cat shakers, and Art Deco. There's lots more about the Guardian line here .

If your chicken needs both socks and ankle bracelets, you're probably taking your work a little too seriously. (Originally posted to flickr on February 10th, 2011.)

"New Ways To Enjoy O & C Frost Seald" (3), c1935

This fold-out menu helps peddle the wonders of "Frost Seald" to those slickers in the Big City. The actual recipes were on the flip side. (Shown slightly larger than original size.)

The redhead looks maybe a little too pleased, as she reminds us that our (not "Frost Seald") bacon should be served "crisp" at Tuesday's breakfast. Just in case we weren't aware. (Shown slightly larger than original size.)

A promotional fold-out published by Olney & Carpenter, Inc. of Wolcott, NY. I took a stab at the year, but as usual with the magic of "circa," I'm not exactly sure. I think "Frost Seald" as a term sounds better than the ubiquitious "fresh frozen" or "frozen fresh," though. And I love the notion of the New York Staters helpfully flying their goodies into the remote corners of the Arctic, as depicted on the back of the pamphlet. (Shown slightly larger than original size.)

Ballard Biscuits Leaflet (2), c1935

Okay, I admit it. The main reason I posted this is because they used the word "Tunaroom." This is my new favorite word of all time. (Shown slightly larger than original size. Originally posted to flickr on February 14th, 2011.)

It's like a big cloud-bedecked bacon pentagram-- er, Star, I mean... Two sections from inside the leaflet.

I don't need this weather forecaster thing. No one does, but I want it and you all do, too. Don't lie to me. This page came from a clipping "grab bag" of scraps. I'm guessing it's from Fortune , because it's the right size. In fact, I shrank it a bit so I could clean it up more easily.

American Legion/Tivoli Beer Ad (2), c1935

Card insert and last call for Tivoli from the back of the menu. A salad would cost you 35 cents for shrimp, chicken, or fruit added. But tuna salad was only a quarter.

Straight whiskey would run you 15 cents. Bonded whiskey: a quarter. For whatever reason, Tivoli itself has no price listing. Maybe it was the Legion's house beer. Bass Ale and Guinness Stout were for the big spenders. A bottle of either would set you back 35 cents.

Lea & Perrins Leaflet, c1935

"Trivia" is probably a more apt term here than "Brain Teaser." Oh, well. Both sides of a promo fold-out published by Lea & Perrins, Inc., New York, New York.
