Loaded jam was clearly the 1950s precursor to loaded brownies.

Today, I learned that the real Nell Gwyn was one of the first women in England who could legally work in the theater as an actress. Before that, she peddled oranges to people who came to watch the plays. (Also, a whole lot of stuff not suitable for an all-ages photostream.) Thank you, Internets!

Mother Cat won't let those kittens near that Canned-Tuna-Canned-Milk Atrocity a page back. Unlike Mrs. America, she has some standards.

Don't get me wrong. I love me some homemade mac 'n cheese, even when my wallet is full, but this arrangement is almost fatally drab in appearance. (Lima beans-- shudder!) This meal could've used help from the Lavender Patrol back on Page 3.

The "Chinese Lantern" jar is adorable, but... wow. I bet it led to a lot of spills.

(L) Advertisement, c1956. (They should've just gone all out and had an illustration of Alice Paul and her forces marching up Fifth Avenue brandishing jam jars.)
(Upper R) A Photoshopped detail from an earlier 1958 ad posting .
(Lower R) An illustration by Chris Ortega, from the article "Exciting New Cakes From Today's Miracle Package Mixes," published in the October 1955 issue of Western Family magazine.

It's due in part to the diminutive scale of these booklets, but I only have to squint a little to imagine almost everything on these pages as novelty buttons. The "pompons," in particular, would be fabulous marching up the front of a fluffy pink angora sweater.

Upper L: You'd think that the truly authentic "3-D" sandwich would be red and green. :/
Upper R: PB & J &... M? Uh, you first. :/ :/
Lower L & R: It's hard to say which is more disturbing: the glossy shellacked ham or the freakish bleeding omelet. I guess the latter might be good for my next Halloween party.

Fruit as we love it most: pulverized, over-sweetened, and oh-so shiny!

(R) I wanted the world on a silver platter, and all I got was this. Oh, well. It's a start.

Across the page, there's a helpful chart, but frankly I lost interest once I confirmed that there were no Bloody Marys involved. :/
