Carnation Ice Cream Ad, 1963

11 Jun 2023 2 276
This is much more action than I want at dessert. But I guess it's better than the modern-day version which also has things like donuts and gold leaf tossed in. o_0 From the May 17th, 1963 issue of Life magazine.

Safeway Ice Cream Ad, c1955

From the Eisenhower era of Family Circle. Everything you could ever want in an ad: Multiple styles of illustration! A cute square Pyrex bowl that holds a serving of refined sugar and butterfat the size of Mt. Hood! Plus, check out that "gift box" ice cream carton ("Party Pride"). On the flip-side of this page is a diet formula ad that scolds Mrs. Middle America for not helping Mr. Middle America stay slim. Ah, Madison Avenue, never ever change! (Originally posted to flickr on February 2nd, 2011.)

Interchemical Corporation Ad, 1954

The illustration is discreetly cropped so you can't see the layer of booze and smokes filling the lower half of the cart. From the April 1st issue of Time magazine.

Bisquick Ad, 1954

I'd be more enthused about these ideas if not for the gory uber-biscuit up top. Yikes! Was the Re-Animator doing commercial photography back then, or what? From the February issue of Family Circle magazine.

I'd be dizzy in the head, too. These "Bunnies" look like they came straight from the mind of H.P. Lovecraft.

Morton Salt Ad, 1956

At Miss Morton's Charm School For Boys, we learned proper posture and coordination the new-fangled way! None of that silly book-balancing stuff! From the November issue of Western Family magazine.

Alpenrose Fold-Out, c1955

A die-cut promotional published by the Alpenrose Dairy, Portland, Oregon. The real "amber" bottle was the same color as a standard beer bottle, if the photos I've seen are to be believed.

[sulks] Damn it, I need a souffle' dish! Living without one is pretty much like living without running water or electricity.

Mayflower Dairy Magic (10), c1954

The Dairy Council reminds you to support your local, uh... Mayflower Madam... Daerie Faerie. Whatever...

Mayflower Dairy Magic (8), c1954

"Clam Dunk" sounds like slang for something men weren't supposed to expect of their wives back then. o_0

It would also appear that Our Heroine comes from The Land Before Gravity, which explains how she can stay upright even without feet.

Spooky. The average Hanna-Barbera cartoon hausfrau could only dream of being this skinny. Still, I'd rather look at them than at a photo of anything described on this page.

While I'm at it, check out this gallery of local businesses from back then, including a 1960 shot of a Mayflower employee (upper left). She looks singularly unenthused, and who could blame her? The egg 'n cottage cheese scramble combo is probably waiting for her at home.

Don't be fooled by the company name or Pilgrim Pete there. According to those helpful souls at Google, this dairy was based in Portland, OR. In 1981, it merged with the Northwest Dairymen's Association. I have never seen this brand anywhere in town, but Darigold , manufactured by the NDA both before and after the merger, is still with us.
