This cover art looks like the paper cutouts our teachers taped to the classroom windows in Kindergarten. Which is honestly a good thing compared to most of the photographs inside. :D

Geisha Canned Foods Booklet, c1930

On the front cover: "Babel Towers." Mostly crabmeat layered with fresh tomato. They're pretty vague about how much mayo you need to hold it all together, so maybe it wouldn't be so bad. Front and back of a 16-pager published by Nozaki Brothers of New York, N.Y.

Philadelphia Cream Cheese Booklet (2), c1955

(L) Yeah, you could get "petals" to look like that using only diluted cream cheese and a spoon. By the way, Kraft has enclosed a coupon good for 50 cents off your next purchase of swampland in South Jersey. (R) That clam dip might not be bad, though the seasonings are pretty intense for the time period. Probably that was a snack you only brought out in the small hours for the serious partygoers, long after the kids were safely in bed.

Upper left: A tisket, a tasket, the wrong olive's in our basket! Lower left: Twenty vegetable varieties in search of a fish stick or a slice of canned meat. Right: They served the pineapple-cheese-green olive-cherry salad-combo at baby showers, so everyone who attended could feel as pregnant as the hostess.

Meal-size Sandwiches, 1956

14 Aug 2011 245
"It's an open-and-shut case! Sandwiches, those all-time favorites, are perfect fare for hot August days... Each is a jiffy 'full-course meal'... "Whenever sandwiches are served, have a good mustard and a spicy catsup around, since very often men like to add their own little personal touch to them. Be sure, too, to have a sharp knife on hand to cut your sandwiches..." Some of these look like they'd rate a chainsaw, actually. Also, I had no idea that you could once buy canned lobster claw all across America! The Fifties were awesome! From the August issue of Everywoman's magazine.

"Thumbnail" illustrations clipped from an article by Mary B. Stevenson. I blew these up to show detail, and did some Photoshop touch-ups that (hopefully) don't intrude on the original style too much. From the August issue of Everywoman's magazine.

24 Apr 2013 189
"The good hostess, therefore, tries to have a wide variety of canapes, and is on the lookout for new combinations to present to her friends. This little book contains many new variations as well as some of the old standbys and will prove to be a friend in need on short notice..." Uh, I'm pretty sure that should've been "a friend in deed. [shrug] I guess nobody's perfect.
