Time For Ice Cream (1), 1947/48

A promotion put out by the National Dairy Council, Chicago, IL. These drawings are what happens when Forties WPA Cubism meets a postwar daydream of Mom, Flag, and Apple Pie (a la mode). Watch them hang out together for hours, reveling in the wonder of icy cold vanilla-flavored FREEDOM! Also, they talk frequently about a variety of dessert called "New York Ice Cream." I once spent several hours in New York, but I have no idea what that is. Anyway, I hope you enjoy this as much as I did. (Enlarged to show detail. Originally posted to flickr on April 3rd, 2011.)

"Sip 'N Sup Soup Meal Recipes" (2), c1950

Above: Was this left over from some promo where you could win Wedgewood and silverplate if you sent in a wheelbarrow full of box tops? I hope so. Below, left: "Good Evening, Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Yes, dinner is crap and my gems are plastic. But given what you pay my husband, maybe you should just shut up and eat it."

Household's Hi Speed Ad, 1957

24 Jun 2011 199
Was this photo supposed to make the "Cook Book" seem big enough for its own room? ("Freddy, be a dear and take the handtruck and bring in Mother's recipe collection. I think some nice orange-glazed pound cake after supper would be just the thing...") Also, something clearly went wrong with that stick of butter. Maybe it's transforming into a bar of soap. From the September issue of Household magazine.

Martex Dish Towel Ad (2), 1957

Looks like coffee was still too common in those days to merit its own tribute panel, but the designs are great, nonetheless. From House Beautiful magazine.

Geisha Canned Foods Booklet (2), c1930

There's also a crab "Heavenly Hash" (no connection to the ice cream of the same name, thankfully) and "Orange Bubble," which is basically a dumpling-biscuit fusion with mandarin orange slices in it. Could be worse.

Wallace Sterling Ad, 1949

Space and perspective seem out of whack in this picture. Maybe it's how one starts to see the world after dusting figurines and polishing silver for days without a break. From National Geographic magazine.

Kraft Miniature Marshmallows, c1950

Why can't the food photos in this booklet look as cute as the graphics? Would color have helped, or just made things worse? [sigh] So many questions... (L) Front and back covers, and (R) the first two pages from a promo published by Kraft Kitchen, Chicago, Illinois.
