Ah, yes... the majestic elephant herds of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania!
More about the history of Dylite, etc. if you're in the mood to feel even more depressed about the future here .
(Probably originally from Time magazine.)

All the diner waitresses within a hundred-mile radius hate this guy. He camps out at the counter for hours and then never leaves more than a five-cent tip.
From Family Circle magazine.

The "Chinese Lantern" jar is adorable, but... wow. I bet it led to a lot of spills.
Clipped mostly from Family Circle magazine.

So... the coffee pot has no spout, and the coffee cup appears to be floating. Furthermore, Dad looks way too pleased for 7AM on a Monday. I'm afraid to ask what's in the hand we can't see.

My favorite effect here is the Dali-esque melting vanity-clock-mirror in the last row of rooms, center image.

"Furnishings by L.S. Ayres & Co., Indianapolis, IN."
I love any color in my house, so long as it's brown!
(Sorry I couldn't pinpoint the date a little better. The company's own homepage says these doors were first unveiled at the 1939 Chicago World's Fair. link And the logo with the debutante was in use by 1954, so...)
Several (mostly outer) sections from a two-sided foldout published by New Castle of Greenfield (?), Indiana.

It would also appear that Our Heroine comes from The Land Before Gravity, which explains how she can stay upright even without feet.

Most of this sounds tolerable, if bland. But I can't get my mind off Mrs. Mayflower's costume. It's part kitchen garb, part cotillion gown. At least the huge skirt is balanced out somewhat by her oversized chef's toque.

Spooky. The average Hanna-Barbera cartoon hausfrau could only dream of being this skinny.
Still, I'd rather look at them than at a photo of anything described on this page.

Thrill as our (rare-for-the-Fifties) blocks of actual cheese sail majestically across the, uh... Milky Way... (I guess...)

While I'm at it, check out this gallery of local businesses from back then, including a 1960 shot of a Mayflower employee (upper left). She looks singularly unenthused, and who could blame her? The egg 'n cottage cheese scramble combo is probably waiting for her at home.
