"This brave daffodil's mission in life, says famed farm photographer J.C. Allen, was to assure him and Mrs. Allen that spring really was 'just around the corner' despite the Indiana snowstorm..." Cover of the March issue.

I'm happy to report that not everything here contains cottage cheese. Just the finger sandwiches.

Eh. Can I just have some of those little rubber balls, please? And a serving of the green stuff, if the cart-toting rabbits on Page 2 haven't already called dibs.

Some clippings from inside the booklet. Some of it was in bad shape, and the Aunt Jemima-wannabe pic was in bad taste. So I left them out. On the other hand, you get the scariness that is a crown roast of lamb stuffed with sausage. (Was sausage really cheaper than bread in the 1930s?) And that's plenty scary and disturbing on its own. Also, I'm sad that I've never seen an ad for "CLIX" shortening.

(Munched in the flickr-to-ipernity crossing, and so re-posted out of sequence. :o ) "In these Intermediates are to be found some of the most pleasing varieties of the entire Narcissus family. The trumpets are shorter than in the preceding class, being mere cups in many cases, and the flowers are not so heavy... they will bring the owner much pleasure."

Garden Bulbs In Color (10), 1938/1945

"...Under proper conditions the Daffodils can be 'naturalized' or made to grow as if they were 'wild.' Open woodland where the trees are so widely space that sunlight can reach the plants at least a few hours each day, and sunny slopes or grassy meadows where the grass need not be cut until after the foliage of the Narcissus has ripened, are ideal locations for this practice..."

"...The true Poet's Narcissus ["Horace" and "Thelma"] are natives of southern Europe where, from France to Greece, they thrive in moist situations in a little shade. They may be recognized by their snow-white petals, yellow or lemon flat eye or crown, and the fact that the blooms are usually solitary..." "...At least a score of Double Narcissus are in commerce, most of which are used by the florists for forcing; few are seen in gardens..."

Garden Bulbs In Color (6), 1938/1945

"...The first of the more important bulbs to brighten our spring gardens... Natives of the eastern hemisphere, they are found wild in Europe, Asia and Northern Africa. They have spread with civilization to the four corners of the earth..."

"Because of the hardiness of these bulbs which are properly expected to remain undisturbed for several years, preparation of the soil should be thorough. They like a soil that is not too heavy, in which drainage is perfect..."
