I've already done the joke about WWII baking booklets always needing to have an aerial view of the finished food in military formation-- to show those Axis powers what for.
Or have I? Covid Brain is real, I'm afraid. :o

Sometimes Mrs. Barton places a recipe right beneath its corresponding photo. Sometimes she doesn't. Frankly, I think she just likes messing with us.

The breads all cluster together like wallflowers at the prom, hoping desperately for the filling of their dreams to come and request just one dance. It's kind of poignant.

I love this picture. You'd rarely see actual half-eaten food in the fantasy land of old-time advertising. Of course, they're too demure to use such an earthy descriptor. [shrug]
Once again, the rule is that type and animal products should not share a page. This time, the "Combination Dishes and Leftovers" heading appears on the page before the photo. Layout consistency was for Commies, I guess.

There's lots and lots of starchy sermonizing in here. Someone slip me a croissant so my stomach doesn't start growling halfway through.

There's also recipes for Root Beer and Lemon Pop in the Dessert breads chapter. No, I don't know why, but it's still awesome that they were there. You could apparently get 20 quarts of root beer from 1/2 cake of yeast. Woo!

Woe to the lady who lost her key to the sugar supply at an hour when no locksmith was available!

These pages appeared only in '41 & '42.
Apparently (L) bread DID turn out to be fattening (who knew?), plus (R) America wasn't yet ready for ethnic oddities like the "Bagle" after all. :(

"Daddy, why is Mommy holding that cake of yeast to her ear like she's listening to it?"
"Never mind, Susie. We'll just go sit in the living room with our soft drinks until she's done."

(L) This page appears only in some of my copies, for whatever reason.
(R) "...But there are times when women like to run up a batch of rolls of their own, or try their hand at a coffee cake, just to see if they can still do it!"
Yeah, you women better not get too big for your britches, just because we're letting you work in the auto plant for now. Tsk!

A promotional booklet published by Standard Brands, Inc., makers of Fleischmann's Dry Yeast.
I've had multiple additions of this thing lying around the house for years. Only when I laid it out for scanning did I notice the "mirror imagery" on the covers.

Here are the last couple of pages (leaving out the index) from the '41 and a '42 addition. (L) Personally, I have my doubts that there's anything "pleasant" about drinking mashed up yeast in watered down tomato juice. Except for maybe the quart of water you'd need to rinse with afterward.

Front and back covers for a promotional published by Franz Bakery, Portland, Oregon. Sadly, they didn't have the giant revolving bread loaf on the factory roof yet. Now you have no choice but to come over and see it for yourself.

Okay, the baked goods don't look like much, but I love her peppy chef's toque. Front portion of a promo from Crown Mills of Portland, Oregon.
