Damn it, I want a red velvet-lined trophy case for my pots and pans, too! (Originally posted to flickr on April 12th, 2011.)

Formica Laminated Plastics Promo (2), c1955

"The Vanitory" is just about the coolest name for anything ever. I may have to start a whole blog devoted to old-time bathroom products, just so I can use that as a title.

I wish I knew enough about design history to pinpoint the date for this a little better. And scoff if you must, but... "Wanke Panel Co." is now known as "Wanke Cascade." They still have locations in North Portland and Washington State. One side of a fold-out.

"Room for everything," huh? All I can think of is how jammed together it all looks. Plus that you'd scrape your skin a lot on the edge of that stone table-hearth thing. Not to mention that it's practically in the fireplace. Nice stonework, though. "With the two folding doors open, the camera looks from the kitchen right through to the living room."

DuBouchett Liqueur Booklet (2), 1945

"From a world of experience: we present this recipe book to assist you in preparing palatable mixed drinks at home..." [nods] Palatable is always good. Check out the enlargement of the DuBouchett HQ. Swanky!

Western Pacific Paneling Ad, 1959

Outsiders could never understand: You need flaming electric orange paneling in the Pacific Northwest, because it's dark and wet nine months out of the freaking year! From the March issue of Better Homes & Gardens magazine.

Briggs Fixtures Ad, 1950

I feel like there's not enough plaid in my life. How about you? From the December issue of Better Homes and Gardens magazine.

Leather Furniture Ad, c1955

I love the tacit admission that 2 out of 3 men will be sleeping at their desks, while the other one will be off at the gymnasium. Happy Labor Day, America!

For the Home of Today (4), c1955

I don't think these colors would be very soothing if you were trying to catch a few Zzs on the couch. Maybe first thing in the morning while the coffee was perking...?

Lack of color doesn't get in the way of the Pre-Sixties trippy factor at all. Wooo!

Everything in the living room goes with gray flannel suits! Yay, Fifties! Front cover of a 16-page craft magazine published by The American Thread Company ("Aunt Lydia's Star Spun," "Aunt Lydia's Heavy Rug" yarns), New York, N.Y.

Don't ask me to explain why A) The TV looks like a microwave B) The toaster looks like a radio C) The porch light is hanging in the kitchen I'm only visiting this decade. :/ From the February issue.

Modernfold Doors Promo (2), c1954

My favorite effect here is the Dali-esque melting vanity-clock-mirror in the last row of rooms, center image.

Modernfold Doors Promo, c1954

"Furnishings by L.S. Ayres & Co., Indianapolis, IN." I love any color in my house, so long as it's brown! (Sorry I couldn't pinpoint the date a little better. The company's own homepage says these doors were first unveiled at the 1939 Chicago World's Fair. link And the logo with the debutante was in use by 1954, so...) Several (mostly outer) sections from a two-sided foldout published by New Castle of Greenfield (?), Indiana.

Hotel de France Postcard, c1960

18 Jun 2012 179
A two-image, oversize postcard. From the back: "780 Broadway, San Francisco, Telephone GA 1-6410. Claude Berhouet and Claudine Berhouet, Props. Friendly, atmospheric. It is reminiscent of those treasured Gallic Cafes so dear to the heart of the true Frenchman. Located in North Beach. Dinners served from 5 to 10 PM." Some additional information about this now-defunct hotel can be found here . Another Hotel de France exists several blocks away from where this one once stood.
