Turn To Sandwiches, 1957

19 Dec 2021 146
I opened this magazine-sized, 20-page promo hoping to see a bread fairy. You know, a peppy, aproned sprite with a magic wand, who'd reward hungry but virtuous mortals by turning various inanimate objects into sandwiches. It didn't happen, sadly. Franz Bakery, promoted on the back cover, is still with us. (Originally posted to flickr on February 7th, 2011.)

Exactly what items are congregating here? Curtains? Hands? Hippie hair? Cephalopods? Well, whatever. It's very cool. Published by Chappell & Co., Inc., New York, N.Y.

"The gardener who works at this potting bench belongs to an army of Westerners with a month of busy weekends ahead. Before you start your planting spree, see page 66." Also, build a greenhouse because getting rained on eight hours a day gets old fast. :P

It's not the best quality image, I'll grant you. But let's stop for a minute and marvel at that combination hot tub-breakfast nook, shall we? From the August issue of Better Homes And Gardens.

"Cover: Seed pods of the goldentrain tree, *Koelreuteria paniculata*, formerly known as K. *japonica*. These bladdery capsules follow the clusters of golden blooms and add a pleasing note of contrast against the lace-like tracery of the leaves." From the September issue.

Yeah, it's all fun and games until the trees default on their student loans. From the December issue of Sunset magazine.

Riceland Rice Booklet (6), c1960

"Mexican Meat, Cornbread Topping." Served with a generous side of vaguely disturbing kitsch. At least you get permission to add more than 1/2 tsp. of chili powder to the skillet "if your family likes 'real hot' food..." What a relief, huh?
