The Club Cocktails- Misc. clippings, 1934

23 May 2011 268
My Photoshop skills are pretty limited, but I went ahead and ran these bigger than they were in the booklet. Just because I love 'em so much. (Clicking on the image itself and then the largest "View All Sizes" option will give you a little more detail.)

The Club Cocktails (6), 1934

23 May 2011 225
"The experienced host or hostess keeps the pantry well stocked with a variety of tinned and glassed foods which, at a moment's notice, may be fashioned into simple, yet delicious, appetizers for the cocktail hour... Rare and more costly products of foreign countries may be purchased and added to your larder for use when a special occasion justifies a more elaborate and unusual diversity..." I have a nagging suspicion that nearly everyone during this time was dreaming about caviar and Pate' de Foie Gras rather than serving it.

Pabst Blue Ribbon Ad, 1951

19 May 2011 209
You can tell it's not much of a game, because the ash tray hasn't been used. At least not yet... From the September 1st issue of Collier's magazine.

Cosco Furniture Ad, c1956

27 Mar 2012 198
Cynthia does a good job of keeping it under wraps, but you can just tell she's incensed that Marian is late getting there with the Mai Tai fixings-- again!

Hotel de France Postcard, c1960

18 Jun 2012 179
A two-image, oversize postcard. From the back: "780 Broadway, San Francisco, Telephone GA 1-6410. Claude Berhouet and Claudine Berhouet, Props. Friendly, atmospheric. It is reminiscent of those treasured Gallic Cafes so dear to the heart of the true Frenchman. Located in North Beach. Dinners served from 5 to 10 PM." Some additional information about this now-defunct hotel can be found here . Another Hotel de France exists several blocks away from where this one once stood.

Royal Coal/Albina Fuel Co. Card, c1930

09 Sep 2012 201
Shown slightly larger than actual size. Albina Fuel Co. still exists, though not at this address . I haven't had any luck pinpointing a decade for this promo, so I've just guessed. Additional info would be welcome.

Recipes & Menus (7), 1948

26 Jan 2013 221
Frito Enchiladas! Frito Shrimp Loaf! Frito Nut Roast! Frito Mock Chops! Frito Stuffed Eggs! Fritos and Chili Casserole! Fritos Italian Style! Hominy a La Fritos! Fritoquiles! (Like the "Happy Landings," but, uh, tossed in the pot in a slightly different sequence.) Frito Cabbage! Peanut Fritos! There's even more. Liver is involved, and chili powder. But for the sake of all humanity, I won't go on.

Christmas Card, c1940

24 Dec 2012 191
Die-cut, shown about twice original size. Background "mat" added in Photoshop. The diagonal line on the left side is a slit in the paper, maybe meant for a flower or dollar bill...?

Valentine Card (5), c1920

There's a Bette Midler karaoke joke in here somewhere, but it's late and I need a beer. ;)

Valentine Card (4), c1920

No, I don't know why Cupid is right-handed but wears his holster on the left. Probably some obscure code lost to us here in the 21st Century.

Valentine Card (3), c1920

15 Feb 2018 188
That look clearly says, "Gimme' candy and lots of it, or I'll read the whole dang poem out loud... all FOUR pages!"

Valentine Card (2), c1920

15 Feb 2018 2 6 3147
"In the days of patch and powder--- Dreamful days of long ago-- If the damosels were prouder Than today we may not know; "But it is no elf of fancy That low whispers to us now Love's persuasive necromancy There was much the same as now. "On the island of Manhattan Dwelt there one of beauty rare, Where sleek beeves were left to fatten In the pastures broad and fair..."

Valentine Card, c1920

Front cover of an illustrated, four-page card. Unsure of the year, and given its overall good shape, it might be a reproduction.
