Saint-Sauveur-le-Vicomte - Abbaye

The "Abbey of Saint-Sauveur-le-Vicomte" was founded in the 11th century and built by monks of the abbey of Jumièges. The abbey church was consecrated within the 12th century, though it was probably not completed then. During the Hundred Years´ War the monks were forced out and parts of the abbey and the church get destroyed. It took long to restore the abbey. The choir, that had been razed, was rebuilt in Gothic style in the fifteenth century. The French Revolution ended the monastic life here. The abbey was sold as national property and was used as a stone quarry.
Marie-Madeleine Postel, born in Barfleur in 1756, had founded the "Sœurs des Écoles chrétiennes de la Miséricorde, today known as "Sœurs de Sainte Marie-Madeleine Postel". In 1832 she could buy the abbey ruins that she wanted to make the home of the congregation. Rebuilding started immediately and already in 1840 Prosper Mérimée classified the church as a "monument historique". Th reconstruction was completed in 1855, nine years after the death of Marie-Madeleine Postel, who was canonized in 1925.
The abbey was severely damaged during WWII, when in June 1944 it was bombed, but meanwhile is in a perfect state.
When Marie-Madeleine Postel and the "sœurs" started here only the southern side wall with the triforium and the crossing of the church were still standing. That means that probably most of the "romanesque" capitals are 19th century neo-romanesque".
Here are the Magi approaching the Holy Family to see young born son.

Jumièges - Abbey

In 654 the abbey was founded by Saint Philibert on a royal domain, bestowed by Clovis II and Queen Balthild. Some decades later, the abbey had prospered and Jumièges prospered and numbered nearly a thousand monks. It was one of the largest and most important abbeys at that time.
Charlemagne´s cousin Tassilo III, Duke of Bavaria, and one of his rebellious rivals, was deposed and sentenced to death by Charlemagne. He then was exiled and lived in the abbey. Of course Tassilo had to renounce his and his family's claims to Bavaria.
In the 9th century the abbey was pillaged and burnt down by the Vikings, but was rebuilt soon after. In 934 twelve monks from Saint-Cyprien in Poitiers settled here and "restarted" the monastery. A new, large church was consecrated in 1067 in the presence of William the Conqueror.
The abbey suffered through the English invasion of the 15th century, recovered until it was was devastated by the Huguenots during the Wars of Religion.
The French Revolution ended the abbey´s existence. The buildings were sold as quarries - so there is only a ruin today. The Tourist Office calls it the "most beautiful ruin of France".

Seen here are the abbey´s towers, seen from the parish church Saint Valentin.

Saint Valentin, the parish church of Jumièges stands since the early times in the center of the graveyard. Nave and aisles date back to the 11th/12th century. The Romanesque choir got demolished within the 16th century and got replaced by the clearly oversized one, seen today.
