Veurne was settlement in possession of the Saint Bertin Abbey in Saint-Omer. The place got fortified against Viking raids around 890.
A count´s chapel existed here. After the relics of Saint Walburga had been transferred to Veurne in the early 9th century the chapel got replaced by a larger Romanesque church. This church was then dedicated to Saint Walburga, an English missionary to the Frankish Empire, Saint Willibald´s and Saint Winibald´s sister and Saint Boniface´s niece.
A chapter of secular canons was related to the church, when mid 13th century the Romanesque choir got pulled down and the erection of a Gothic choir started. It was completed in the early 14th century.
When the old nave burned down in 1353 fruitless attemps were undertaken, to built a large Gothic nave with a massive tower on the west.
After the French Revolution the building was sold for demolition, but a yaer later, Veurne´s population bought the church back and the restoration could start within the 19th century.
Two names carved into the canon´s choir stall. 1715??

When Veurne became a city in the 12th century, trade with England flourished, but when the relations with England came to a standstill and the city’s economy went into decline.
After Veurne was taken by Spanish troops led by Alexander Farnese, later Governor of the Spanish Netherlands, during the Dutch Revolt, Spanish influence was obviously strong.
In 1637 a local monk founded the "Sodaliteit van de Gekruisigde Zaligmaker". Since 1644 a procession is organized. Till today "penitents" dressed in rough brown clothes, heads covered by hoods, carry crosses through Veurne end of July. I know of similar processions in Spain..
Here is the very informative website:

The Sint-Niklaaskerk was originally erected within the 12th century and was a part of a Premonstratensian convent. Only the lower part of the tower (48 metres tall) dates to that era. The church was rebuilt 1494 - 1498 in Gothic style.

Around noontime the farmer's market is closing down on the "Grote Markt". In the corner of the rectangular place is the twonhall, behind is the large Sint-Walburgakerk.
