The church, today located in the center of the village, was erected mid 12th century, when it was part of a castle. A century later the church got enlarged and later further modified.
In 2009, during the restauration of the church, faded frescoes from the 14th/15the century were decovered under the plaster. Probably a "Last Judgement". The smiling skeleton reminds me on a "Danse macabre" a popular icon from the 15th century on (eg Chaise-Dieu, Basel).

Notre-Dame de l’Assomption was the church of the Augustinian "Abbey of Châtre". The church, that today is completey isolated, surrounded by fields and meadows, was erected in the 12th century.
During the Wars of Religion the abbey, that actually was a collegiate of Augustinian canons, got ruined. After the French Revolution the buildings were declared national property and sold as "Bien national".
Most of the buildings got dismanteled, but the church survived. Just east of the apse is this ruin.

There are some sophisticated carvings in the typical style of the Saintonge. Here is one of the capitals.

The church is open for visitors only on sundays, so it was locked, when we arrived.

The single nave parish church in the center of Saint-Brice was erected in the 12th century, but got enlarged and modified later. The choir was added a century later, the nave got remodeled within the 15th century. The large triangular false gable looks - somehow strange.

Saint-Mandé-sur-Brédoire is about 4 kms west of Aulnay, a distance an able man walked probably in less than an hour. It is absolutely clear, that the master-workshops working in Aulnay, did work here as well.
Saint-Brice, a small single nave structure, has many parallels to Saint-Pierre in Aulnay. Some icons were tried here, before they were carved in another scale and another quality for Saint-Pierre. So this church may have served as a "sample book".
The interior of Saint-Brice is pretty simple (compared to the elaborate side portal), but there are some capitals near the apse. Here is one, that seems a bit "rough", compared to the works in Aulnay.

Most surprising is Saint-Brice´s side portal. Here is the capital of one of the flanking portals. A common icon . "Two birds drinking from a chalice". Here the chalice is the fountain of life.

This person is next to the loving couple (previous upload).
The head is way too big, the braid is really long. The weirdest point I see is, that the leg never had a foot! The foot is not lost (broken off or weathered away), - there never was a foot. What got lost was a very long arm. The hand can still be seen on the leg. The other leg is very short...

Here are seven bishops (with croziers), a devil and a dragon. Mitres had a different shape in the 12th century.
