It is known, that in 895 a small chapel existed, where the church is now. In 1090 a convent of regular canons was established here. The erection of todays church started within the 12th century, when the apses were constructed.

The famous Cistercian Fontfroide Abbey (= "Abbaye Sainte-Marie de Fontfroide") (about 20kms southwest) had 24 granges - Fontcalvy was one of them. It was built like a fortified castle between 1297 and 1320. Lay brothers lived and worked here to support the abbey. Fallen into disrepair within centuries a slow rebuilding process seems to have started.
