The burial mounds on Monte Areo have been known since the 19th century, but the importance of this archaeological site was only recognised in 1990 when more than 30 burial mounds were discovered during an archaeological survey.
The burial mounds consist of alternating layers of earth and stone. There are also two square burial chambers, a trapezoidal dolmen and a short, single-lane corridor.
They are dated to 3,000 AD.

The chapel and necropolis of San Vítor de Barxacova is an archaeological site, consisting of the remains of a medieval chapel and a necropolis with anthropomorphic tombs excavated in stone. The graves, which are up to 2.5 metres long, are mostly west-east orientated. The site is located in the valley of the Mao River, near the confluence with the Sil.
The chapel and the necropolis belonged to the monastery of Santa Cristina de Ribas de Sil. Until the 12th century, it belonged to the monastery of San Lorenzo de Barjacoba , which at that time became a bailiwick of a commandery, belonging to the order of Saint John of Jerusalem .

Mallorca is the largest island in the Mediterranean Balearic Islands, which are part of Spain. Mallorca is an extremely popular holiday destination. The Palma de Mallorca Airport, one of the busiest in Spain, is used by about 30 million tourists per year.
After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, the island was invaded by the Vandals in 425. The time of the Vandals ended, when Byzantine troops general took the island in 534. The first Muslim arrivals were in 707. These ended the Byzantine domination and established their own hegemony. Until 903, the island was part of the Umayyad Caliphate.
From between 902 and 1229 the island was under Islamic control. James I of Aragon ( aka "Jaume el Conqueridor") conquered Mallorca in December 1229.
The hiking trail to the necropolis Son Real started at the "Cases de Son Real", a kind of public finca. The museum was closed, but the local animals were all outside. Here is one of the black Iberian pig (cerdo ibérico), known for "Jamón de Pata Negra", a prime-quality ham.

The necropolis of Son Real is located on the small headland "Punta des Fenicis" (Fenicis - Phoenicians) on the Badia d'Alcúdia ("Bay of Alcúdia"). Seen in the backdrop is Port d'Alcúdia.
The necropolis dates from the 7th to 4th centuries BC. Archaeological excavations on the site began after the discovery in 1957. Over the next decade, more than 100 graves were unearthed and the remains of about 300 bodies and many funerary objects were found.
The origin of those buried in the necropolis is unclear, as no associated settlement has been found to date.

Arzachena - Li Muri

Li Muri, a prehistoric necropolis, only about 1 km northwest of Bronze age Li Lolghi (see previous uploads) is even older. It is late Neolithic, dated to 3.500 - 2.700 BC. ascribable to the Arzachena culture, that left structures like Li Muri on the islands of Sardinia and Corsica.
Li Muri is composed by five stone cists, four of which are surrounded by circles of small slabs, that probably once hold a heap of small stones and earth covering the cists (about 5000 years ago). Menhirs stand upright a little outside the circles.

This church, dedicated to Saint Peter, is better kown under the name "L'église aux trois sanctuaires". It was erected on the "Butte d'Isle-Aumont" a hill that in acient time may have been a fortified island in the swampy valley. A settlement already existed here in pre-Roman times. Within the 6th century a merovingian necropolis covered the hill. More than a thousand graves have been found and about 600 merovingian sarcophagi have been excavated some decades ago.
In 1097 Robert of Molesme founded the priory of Saint-Ursion, a castle was built next to it. Both structure are gone.
The church has two naves. The left nave dates to the 12th century, the right nave was added about 200 years later.
The church was locked, but Mrs. Jacotin opened the gates and doors and guided us around. Merci beaucoup!
The right nave, that was added to the Romanesque church within the 15th century.

This crucifix was probably carved late 13th/early 14th century. Romanesque carvings would be less realistic and depict more likely a „Christus triumphans“ instead of the suffering „Christus patiens“ seen here.

Funerary steles, excavated around (and under the choir of the) church are displayed. They are believed to be "early christian". I have seen similar ones in Civaux, another village with a huge merovingian necropolis.

There are some Romanesque carvings here, that seem older than the 12th-century-nave. A pair of evil dragons trying to mislead a poor soul.
