Venice (ital. Venezia) is one of the most important tourist destinations worldwide with about 30 million visitors each year. I have already uploaded dozens of shots from previous visits, so I´ll try to cut down the number of uploads this time. The Last Supper

Savigny - Notre-Dame

A priory of the Abbey Sainte-Barbe en Auge (100kms east) existed nearby since 1107. "Notre Dame" (co-dedicated to "Sainte Barbe") was given to the priory in 1165. An inscription in the apse tells, that the church was consecrated in 1128. Choir and apse, constructed during the Romanesque period, still exist. Notre Dame is known for the sculpted decor, as well as its 14th century frescoes, discovered end of the 19th century. Here is "The Last Supper" in a symmetrical composition organized around Christ. Saint John is leaning his head against Christ's shoulder. Saint Paul (sword and balding head), sits to the left of Christ. Saint Paulus holds a large key. Judas (a bit hard to see) sits across from Christ, isolated on the other side of the table. On the table are large platters of fish, jugs, pitchers and goblets, there are as well loaves of bread.

Antigny - Notre-Dame

Notre Dame, the parish church of the small town of Attigny, dates back to the 12th century was built, where a merovingian chapel, placed in the center of a large merovingian necropolis, stood before. It is proven, that Notre Dame in 1184 existed in dependence of the Benedictian monastery (4kms north). The structure seen today was altered rebuilt and renovated many times. Notre Dame is known for its frescoes. The frescoes of the nave, seen here, are probably older than the frescoes of the "Chapelle Sainte-Catherine", added the the church in 1421. One of the nave´s frescoes depicts "The Last Supper". The supper here includes bread, fish, a small mammal and wine. Note, that there are only knives on the table. Forks were not common in medieval times. Forks were seen as devilish. Evil tools. Many churches in the valley of the Gartempe river are decorated with murals. Tourists may follow "Circuit Vallée des Fresques".
