Arneburg - St. Georg

Arneburg, today a pretty small town, was already referred to as civitatis (“city”) in 984. The castle of the same name was built around 925 under Heinrich I as a border fortress against the Slavs and destroyed in 997, but was rebuilt by 1025. The oldest surviving building is the Romanesque church of St. George, built around 1200. During the town fire of 1767, the inside of the church burned down completely. Rebuilding was completed in 1774. The Baroque altar probably dates from this time.
