"Le Café Terrasse des Grands Dignitaires" is a small coffee shop on the top of the Palais des Papes. A perfect place to take a rest and have a café au lait.

Cologne - MAKK

Cologne is the fourth-largest city in Germany - and one of the oldest. A Germanic tribe, the Ubii, had a settlement here, this was named by the Romans "Oppidum Ubiorum". In 50 AD, the Romans founded "Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium", the city then became the provincial capital of "Germania Inferior". The MAKK (Museum fuer Angewandte Kunst / Museum of Applied Arts Cologne) not only has a collection of outstanding design-pieces, it also has this cosy coffee shop in the center of Cologne. Here you can sip a cappucino and admire the Gothic tracery of the former cloister.

Porto - Santo Ildefonso

Porto is with a population of about 250.000 the largest city in Northern Portugal. In "Greater Porto", the metropolitan area, live even more than 1.7 million people. The historical center of Porto was proclaimed a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996. Port wine is named after Porto, since the cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia on the southern banks of the river Douro are the centers for packaging, transport and export of the fortified wine. Some years ago I had been here for a couple of days before I started the "Camino Portugues" here. Having a coffee in one of the coffe-shops around the "Praça da Batalha" with a view onto to the "Igreja de Santo Ildefonso". The church was erected in baroque style between 1709 and 1739, when finally the towers were completed. Since 1932, the facade is covered with (around 11.000) azulejo tiles

Zadar - St. Lawrence

A museum attendant had told me, that the small church of St. Lawrence (Sveti Lovre) was to find at Narodni Place. Near the famous City Guard (Gradska straža) with the city clock tower, "but behind a coffe shop". It took some time, but I found it. Behind the coffee shop! The visitor actually walks through the coffee shop - and there it is. Dated to the 11th century, small and hard to find. When it was erected, there were still many Roman ruins around, so that building material got reused. Looking back - to the coffee shop on the other end of the church.

For a while I saw this as a baptism..
