When the church, dedicated to Saint Amans de Rodez, got erected within the 12th century, it was dependent from the abbey Saint-Martin in Tulle (20kms north). It is known, that Humbaud, bishop of Limoges, consecrated a church here in 1094, but at that time the structure cannot have been completed
The portal of Saint-Chamant is extraordenary (for a village church). While the tympanum over the doors is undamaged, all capitals are damaged. After the French Revolution some small vandals used their hammers.
The dog chases the flock of chickens all around the archivolt.

Not much is left from archangel Michael, who holds the scale at this 'weighing of souls'. The devil on the right is still complete, his mouth is wide open..

A well dressed miser with a huge sack (full of gold and silver) badly adviced by two ugly envoys of the evil not to share his wealth with the skinny beggars, that flank him.

Here is the portal of Saint-Amant. Due to the thick walls erected for the fortification of the tower, it is not symmetrically any longer. The tympanum depicts Christ, flanked by angels, and below the Virgin with the apostles. All capitals got damaged during the French Revolution, fortunately the vandals did not have a ladder.

The tower with the sculpted portal date back to 12th century. The tower got fortified later, and so could shelter the population in case of an act of war.

When the church, dedicated to Saint Amans de Rodez, got erected within the 12th century, it was dependent from the abbey Saint-Martin in Tulle (20kms north). The tower and the narthex still date back to that time. The tower got fortified later. The nave of the Romanesque church got lost. The nave seen here was built wothin the 14th/15th century. The sacresty was probably added in the 19th century.
