The building is an example of Gothic Revival architecture and was constructed between 1842 and 1845. It was originally built as a meeting hall for the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. The Royal Mile comprises Edinburgh Castle Esplanade and a succession of streets which form the main thoroughfare of the Old Town. It runs between two significant locations in the history of Scotland, Edinburgh Castle and the Palace of Holyroodhouse. The Royal Mile is the busiest tourist street in the Old Town.
