Glasgow - Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum

15 Feb 2025 15
With over 635,000 inhabitants, Glasgow is the largest city in Scotland, ahead of Edinburgh, and the third largest city in the United Kingdom after London and Birmingham. Around 80 AD, the Romans colonised the city, which was probably called Cathures at the time. The Romans later built the Antonine Wall around 140 AD to separate Roman Britain from Celtic and Pictish Caledonia. According to legend, Glasgow itself was founded by the Christian missionary St Mungo in the 6th century. He is said to have built a church on the site of today's cathedral. Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum is a museum and art gallery located in Kelvingrove Park in the West End of the city, Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum is one of Scotland's most popular museums. It opened in 1901, and the collection encompasses natural history, Egyptian antiquities, design, architecture, medieval arms and armoury, Scottish history and the history of Glasgow. The building also houses one of Europe’s great civic art collections, including Scottish, European, African, Asian and Oceanic fine and decorative arts Kelvingrove re-opened in 2006 after a three-year refurbishment and restoration. The 22 galleries display over 8,000 objects. Henri Matisse (1869 - 1954) / Woman in Oriental Dress / 1919

Grenoble - Musée de Grenoble

Grenoble was first mentioned in 43 BC. The city lies at a strategic point on the Roman road and was fortified under Diocletian. A diocese is attested from at least 381. After the collapse of the Roman Empire, the city became part of the first Kingdom of Burgundy in the 5th century, and later the Kingdom of Burgundy until 1032, when it was incorporated into the Holy Roman Empire. In 1242 it received city rights. The university was founded in 1339. In 1349 Grenoble came with the entire Dauphiné by sale to the Dauphin of France, who thereby became a de jure vassal of the Holy Roman Emperor. In 1219, Grenoble experienced its worst flood, a veritable deluge due to the breach of the natural barrier at Lac de Saint-Laurent in the Romanche Valley. The resulting tidal wave killed about half of Grenoble's population. Today Grenoble has about 160.000 inhabitants and is seen here from the Grenoble-Bastille cable car that takes the tourist within minutes to the top of the mountain where the Fort de la Bastille is located. - The Museum of Grenoble was already founded in 1798. For decades up to the 1950s, it was considered the very first museum of modern art in France. In 1982 a plan to construct a new building was announced, the construction began in 1990, and four years later the new building housing the collections was inaugurated. Nice - Musee Matisse

04 Apr 2011 220
As I was not able to see the interior of the "Chapelle du Rosaire" in Vence (you may remember it was "Fermeture Anuelle") I returned to the Matisse Museum, as I had seen a model here. I wanted to see the model and the sketches of that chapel again, as the "Chapelle du Rosaire" was regarded by Matisse himself as his "masterpiece. It was not only his "major work", but as well his last complex one. So here is the model, that was used. I am not sure, wether it was legal to take and upload this photo. I do respect the copyrighht of course. In case the model is protected - and will immidiately delete the photo, if there is a copyright-holder, who.. Vence - Chapelle du Rosaire

26 Mar 2011 155
Though I was early that day, I was too late. About three weeks too late. The "Chapelle du Rosaire" was closed. I learned from the paper, pasted onto the locked door: "Fermeture annuelle 15.11. - 20.12." So I could only see the building from the sidewalk of the street, what leaning over the fence, produces "slanted" photos like this one. This chapel was regarded by Matisse himself as his "masterpiece. It is a very complex work of art and has a wonderful background. Many of the artists around Matisse (e.g. Picasso) did not like what Matisse was doing here. Matisse started this "project" at the age of 77 - and spent more than 4 years. Please follow the whole story of the chapel on Wikipedia: english en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chapelle_du_Rosaire_de_Vence french fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chapelle_du_Rosaire_de_Vence german de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chapelle_du_Rosaire_de_Vence Here are the opening hours: maison.lacordaire.pagesperso-orange.fr/index02.htm

Nice - Cimetière de Cimiez

16 Mar 2011 205
The grave of french artist Henri Matisse and his wife Amelie is on the cemetery next to the monastery in Cimiez. Matisse has lived and worked in Cimiez, so he probably knew this place. Visitors placed lots of stones and little presents on the tomb. Some kids left drawings for him wikipedia: english: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henri_Matisse french: fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henri_Matisse german: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henri_Matisse
