It is seen here with a typical zigzag design. The Gothic church of today was erected from 1230 on and follows the Gothic style of the Île - de - France. It was funded by Mathilde de Dammartin, daughter in law of Philip II of France.

Not much is known about the history of Notre-Dame de l’Assomption, an outstanding example of the specific "style saintongeais". As the structure is so masterly built and has such sophisticated carvings, it is believed, that this was a priory church, when it was built mid of the 12th century. Light pours into the xemicircular choir through five windows. The unknown masters, who created this delicate structure, gave two of the pillars (in the center) a soft zigzag design.
