Cave of Agia Sofia

The Cave of "God's Wisdom" is only accessible via a steep stone staircase up a rocky slope. The name of the cave and the Chapel of Saint Sophia derives from an icon found here. According to legend, Cretan sailors defended Constantinople against Turkish attacks. When the Sultan declared a truce, he allowed them to return home. They were given permission to take something with them. Some Cretans from Kissamos took the icon and hid it in this cave. Later, a chapel was built here. The cave is almost circular and has a diameter of 50 m. In places, it is up to 20 m high. The entrance has a 25 m opening. Excavations have revealed that the cave was already inhabited in the Neolithic period.
