The original Inveraray was located just north of the present village. In the course of the construction of Inveraray Castle by Archibald Campbell, 3rd Duke of Argyll in the second half of the 18th century, the present Inveraray was built as a planned town from 1743. The buildings of the old settlement near the castle were demolished between 1758 and 1776.Inveraray is a tourist centre. Most of the inner area of Inveraray is a listed building. The buildings in the town centre are built in the Georgian style. The Parish Church is located on a traffic island in the middle of Main Road. Construction began around 1794[. The Duke of Argyll paid for the building costs. To cater for both the Gaelic-speaking parish of Glenaray and the English-speaking parish of Inveraray, the church was fitted with a solid partition wall, allowing separate services to be held. Following safety concerns due to its poor structural condition, the church tower was demolished in 1941. The building was remodelled for the last time in 1953. The southern, formerly Gaelic-speaking part of the building has since been converted into a community hall. Today, church services are held exclusively in the northern part.
