The Cistercian monastery was founded in 1192 by Roland, Lord of Galloway. Glenluce Abbey was a daughter foundation of Dundrennan Abbey, a daughter of Rievaulx Abbey in Yorkshire, which in turn was a daughter monastery of Clairvaux Primary Abbey. After the Scottish Reformation in 1560, the abbey fell into disrepair.
