The existence of a monastery in Freixo de Baixo, associated with the Canons of St Augustine, has been documented since the end of the 11th century. The current building dates from the 13th century.] However, the monastic community went into progressive decline throughout the Modern Age. After 1834, the monastery was abandoned.
