The oldest document concerning the Church of São Mamede de Vila Verde dates from 1220, when it was already part of the patronage of the Monastery of Santa Maria de Pombeiro. The rebuilding of this church, probably carried out in the 14th century, is attributed to the siblings Martim and Ana Anes, whose tombs are outside. The church was built using the construction techniques, floor plan typical of Romanesque architecture. The arrangement of the portals and the use of plain corbels, however, associate this monument with a time when the Gothic style was already dominant.
