Under his successors, was the capital of an emirate that encompassed the Spanish Extremadura and, in the 11th century, almost all of Portugal. In 1094 the city was conquered by the Almoravids.It was conquered in 1230 by Alfonso IX. and permanently taken from the Moors by León. Its headquarters are located on the site of the "Islamic citadel" in the highest part of Badajoz. Its building has the typical structure of a palace fortress. It was built in the 16th century by Suárez de Figueroa. The existing building was renovated several times and was part of the San Jose barracks in the 18th century. Later, after the War of Independence, the building was practically in ruins until restoration work began in 1970.

The Casa Álvarez Buiza is an outstanding building within the Andalusian regionalism style of Art Nouveau. It stands out for the profuse use of decorations of tiles, glazes, and exposed brick. Today it hosts a Cervecería and the Colegio de Aparejadores.

The current neo-Gothic building was erected in 1917 on the ruins of a 13th-century hermitage dedicated to Saint Joseph. Saint Joseph was the patron saint of Badajoz for several centuries since the conquest of the city from the Moors by the Leonese king Afons IX. took place on the saint's day, March 19, 1230.
