Sandau - St. Laurentius und St. Nikolaus

The church was built around 1200 by Dutch colonists and probably Jerichow monks and dedicated to St. Nicholas. It replaced a wooden church that had been built on a Slavic sacrificial site. In 1450 conversions were made in the Gothic style, for example with ribbed vaulting in the choir.
In April 1945, the city was 80% destroyed after a nearby Waffen SS shot and killed a US parlimentaire. The church was badly damaged by artillery fire and more than 50 percent of the tower was destroyed. From 1952 to 1958 the nave was repaired, the damaged tower remained as a memorial for decades.
The tower, a massive westwork, got reconstructed from 2002 - 2013, but the "scar" is clearly visible.

The church is a large Romanesque brick building strongly influenced by the architecture of the near church of the Jerichow monastery. It was consecrated in a document in 1212. The church is a basilica with six bays without a transept, with a square choir and a semicircular apse, as well as an unusually powerful transverse rectangular westwork. The roof truss was dendrochronologically dated to 1484/85.
An epitaph of the von Bismarck family, they had a castle nearby. Otto von Bismarck was born in Schönhausen in 1815 and was baptized in this church. From 1862 to 1890 - with a brief interruption - he was Prime Minister of Prussia, and from 1867 to 1871 he was also Chancellor of the North German Confederation. From 1871 to 1890 he was the first Reich Chancellor of the German Reich, whose founding he was instrumental in driving forward.

The village church of Wust is a flat-roofed brick building consecrated between 1191 and 1206. The church consists of a nave and a semicircular apse. The tower dates from the Baroque period and consists of a massive substructure and a two-story half-timbered tower from 1727.
Adjacent to the apse in the east is the baroque crypt of the von Katte family from 1708. The lieutenant Hans Hermann von Katte is buried in this crypt.
Hermann von Katte was a lieutenant in the Prussian army and a close friend of the young Frederick II. Both were interested in playing the flute and in poetry. In the spring of 1730, during a maneuver, the crown prince got into a heated argument with his father, Frederick William I. Frederick revealed to his friend his plan to flee to France to escape the educational power of his strict and sometimes brutal father. Katte tried to dissuade him, but eventually supported him. Frederick tried unsuccessfully to escape on August 5, 1730, while Katte kept in touch in Potsdam. A compromising letter exposed Hermann von Katte as an accomplice and he was arrested a short time later.
The king threatened to have the crown prince and Katte executed for desertion. Finally, Frederick William I ordered Katte's execution by beheading. The king is said to have forced his son to watch the execution of his friend.

The Slavs built Jerichow Castle (the name is of Slavic origin - "castle of the brave" - so not biblical) to defend their western border. Jerichow was first mentioned at the end of 1144 when Premonstratensian canons founded the Jerichow Monastery. In 1148 the canons relocated the site because of the disturbing market activity.
Jerichow received city rights in 1336, but in the same year, the city was almost completely destroyed by a flood on the Elbe. Around 1530, the Reformation found its way. During the Thirty Years' War in 1631, the city was destroyed and looted
The Romanesque church is a brick building erected between 1200 and 1220. The half-timbered tower was added in the 17th century.
