With more than 17,000 inhabitants, Monzón is the second largest city in the northern Spanish province of Huesca in the Aragon region.
Monzon was conquered by El Cid in 1083. Sancho Ramírez created the kingdom of Monzón for his son, the future Pedro I, before becoming king of Aragon. This situation lasted until 1126 when it fell back into Muslim hands for four years. Between 1130 and 1136 it was held by Christians, and was lost again, and from 1143 the city was held by the Templars who established an important commandery here. The Teutonic Order also had a commander's office here since 1222.
The first fortress on the top of a 100 m high cliff was built during the Caliphate of Cordoba in the 10th century. In 1089 Sancho Ramírez conquered the territory as part of the Reconquista. Later, the hilltop castle was handed over to the Templar Order, who had the castle reinforced with additional walls and enlarged with annexes.
