Bazzano - Santa Giusta fuori le mura

29 Dec 2022 71
Bazzano is a small village (about 600 inhabitants) about 5 km outside of L'Aquila, to which it now belongs. In the Middle Ages, the place was more important, and could afford to build this church in the 12th century. The church was built on the site of a pre-existing 9th-century structure. It stands on the site where legend has it that the young Santa Giusta and all her relatives were martyred. In 2009, the church was damaged by the earthquake, with the collapse of the bell tower and the top of the facade, and damage to the internal parts. After the shoring was made safe, the restoration work began in 2011 and is still ongoing.
