The origins of the city go back to the High Middle Ages. There were two districts the upper one, whose inhabitants lived around the "Fonte dei Lombardi", were associated with the Church of the Latin Rite, and the lower one, whose inhabitants living around "Piazza dei Greci", advocates of the Parish of the Greek Rite. Santa Maria del Poggio, is raised like a fortress, on the top of a hill. The original building, the Cappella di S. Giovanni, is located on the floors below and dates back to the early Middle Ages, it was then enlarged and raised during the 18th century, then remodeled inside in Baroque style. The earthquake of 1998 caused considerable damage to the building. Here you can find more photos from the Basilicata region: www.ipernity.com/doc/323415/album/1285972
