The origins of Klimontów date back to the 13th century, when it was founded as a village. In 1604 it received town rights, and in 1613 the town was granted permission to hold three fairs a year. Two years later, the construction of a Dominican monastery was completed. The "Lesser Poland Way" (Małopolska Droga św. Jakuba) is a medieval pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. It runs from Sandomierz to Kraków. The Lesser Poland Way was reopened in 2009 and passes next to the former Dominican convent. The way to Santiago de Compostela from here is about 3000 km long.
