The origins of Klimontów date back to the 13th century, when it was founded as a village. In 1604 it received town rights, and in 1613 the town was granted permission to hold three fairs a year. Two years later, the construction of a Dominican monastery was completed.
Jerzy Ossoliński, a highly educated Polish nobleman, who had led different diplomatic missions in Europe, financed the erection of this church in the style of Roman and Venetian buildings. The construction started in 1643, but got interrupted by Ossolińsk's death. His body was laid in the basement of the unfinished church.
During the Second Northern War ("Swedish Deluge") the building was burnt down, and another fire took place in 1690.
It was not until 1732 that a copper dome was erected. The finishing works continued for many years.
The church is an elliptical structure with a dome.
