The town of Võru German: Werro) was founded in 1784, when the governor-general of the deputy governor of Riga gave his approval to the place. In 1788, Catherine II confirmed the coat of arms of the town of Võru. According to the town plan, the town should have a network of regular rectangular streets. The historical street network has been preserved, and the older single-story wooden houses are in the old part of the town. The Lutheran (1793) and Orthodox (1804) churches are still reminders of the town's early years. In the 19th century, Võru was also known as a school town. In the second half of the 19th century, there were 7 teachers and 317 pupils in 7 schools in Võru. Friedrich Reinhold Kreutzwald, author of the Estonian national epic "Kalevipoeg", lived in Võru from 1833 to 1877. The Võru Folklore Festival is held annually in Võru in July since 1995. The Lutherian St. Catharine church.

Muhu - Katariina kirik

The island is of Muhu is divided from mainland Estonia by the Suur Strait and from Saaremaa by the Väike Strait. It is linked by ferry to the mainland, and to Saaremaa by a causeway. In January 1227, an army of the Livonian Brothers of the Sword crossed on sea ice from the mainland and attacked the island of Saaremaa to reduce the last holdout of pagan Estonians. The ) was fought on 16 February 1270 between the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Livonian Order on the frozen Baltic Sea between the Muhu Island and the mainland. The Lithuanians achieved a decisive victory. The church was founded by the master of the Livonian Order Otto von Lutterberg in 1267. The church was probably made of wood and only replaced by the current stone building in the final years of the 13th century. A window in the west wall and the base of the altar dates from this period. Somewhat later are the murals. During the Great Northern War in 1640, the church was damaged by a fire. In 1941, it was bombed in a German air raid. and that destroyed the roof. Up to 1958, the church had no roof, which caused immense damage. Before the Reformation, the (then catholic) church was decorated with murals that were found in 1970 under a thick layer of plaster. Unfortunately, the restoration failed at that time, but one of the paintings is still there.

Karja's St. Catherine's Church is located in the area of the neighbouring village of Linnaka. Around 1254, there was already a wooden church on the site. It was destroyed in 1343. The present church was built in the Gothic style between 1340 and 1350, probably by a French-influenced master from the Swedish island of Gotland. The hall church built by him has a single nave. The church has been preserved almost unchanged in its original form. It is claimed, that this church is one of the country churches with the most sculptures carved in stone in the whole of northern Europe. The devil is breathing down the whisperer's neck.

In the centre is St Catherine, holding the palm branch as a martyr. On the left, a queen (?) is being pulled into heaven by angels, while on the lower right the devil is waiting for the king (?), but he too is saved by an angel.

These three people are on the left side of the scene (previous upload). Are they bringing a reliquary to the bishop?

It can now be found on the southern wall of the church. Christ in the centre, the Virgin Mary on the left and St. John on the right. To the left of the Virgin Mary is a crucified criminal who has repented of his sins. His soul leaves his body in the form of a small child, who is conceived by an angel who takes him to heaven. Christ's head is turned towards him. The second criminal has not repented of his sin. His soul is grabbed by a ridiculous horned devil who takes the soul to hell.

Some graffiti are carved into the wall of the church.
