Montbozon - Boucherie

16 Jun 2024 3 95
The name Montbozon probably dates back to around 800 and goes back to Count Bozon, a grandson of Charlemagne. A noble family from Montbozon has been documented since the 12th century. Only around 500 residents were unable to keep the butcher's shop open.

Luxeuil les Bains was known to the Romans as Luxovium. They were attracted by the more than a dozen warm springs. In 590, the iro-scottish missionary St. Columban founded the Abbey of Luxeuil. In the 8th century, it was destroyed by the Saracens. It was rebuilt, but afterward, the monastery and town were devastated by the Normans, Magyars, and Muslims. Originally built on multiple hot springs that fed them, the thermal baths were remodeled mid-18th century when tourism started. Tourism had its peak in the early 20th century.

In 1975 Luxeuil had a population of 10.105. In 2019 there were only 6623 inhabitants. Not enough customers for the Papiterie.

Construction of the abbey church began in 1215 on the foundations of a 10th-century previous building that had been burned down in 1201 by Richard de Montbéliard. It was consecrated in 1340. After the abbey was dissolved during the French Revolution, the church became a parish church in 1830. In the 1860s it was restored under the direction of Eugène Viollet-le-Duc. Much of the 15th-century cloister still exists.

Marast - Prieuré

13 Jan 2019 1 164
The priory was founded in 1117 by Augustinian monks from the Abbey of Chaumousey (80kms north). The church, built between 1120 and 1130, was dedicated to the Virgin Mary, but resulting from a local devotion to the Mary Magdalene, the name of the 13th century church became "Sainte-Marie-Madeleine". Monastic life in Marast endet, when in 1747 the last canon died. The buildings were sold as "National Property" after the Revolution in 1792. Meanwhile the "Amis du Prieuré de Marast" try to save and revitalize the place. Once the cloister was behind the gate to the left.

Moimay - Fontaine-lavoir

Since 1876 the small village of Moimay (pop. 240) has a wonderful lavoir. Since 1912, when it got the elegant roof, it looks a bit like a garden kiosque.

Villersexel - Auberge de la Terrasse Restaurant

11 Jan 2019 182
Villersexel has this nice hotel and restaurant, where we spent a summer evening under the shady trees. Filet de canard aux griottines de Fougerolles avec rattes et légumes I learned that "Griottines de Fougerolles" are cherries macerated in eau de vie, a speciality around Fougerolles in Franche-Comté. "Rattes" are an old variety of potatoes. Small with a nutty flavour.

Gray - Notre Dame

11 Jan 2019 3 1 156
The basilica was built between 1481 and 1560, following the sack of the town by French troops of Charles I d'Amboise and the fires of 1477 and 1479. It is an example of late Gothic architecture. The tympanum depicts the coronation of the Virgin. An icon that was very popular during "Gothic" times.

Gray - Hôtel de ville

11 Jan 2019 1 151
Gray had an important harbour on the river Saone and the 16th century was a kind of golden age for the town, when through the trade on the river money came in. Then Gray could afford to have built such an town hall in Renaissance style.

Autrey-lès-Gray - Saint-Didier

11 Jan 2019 162
The church was erected as an abbey church 12th/13th century, when the Cistercian "Abbaye de Theuley" started a "filiation" here. This may be merged with a priory, belonging to the "Abbaye Saint-Étienne" in Dijon. The statue of the Virgin is much younger than the church.
