Sauveterre - Pont de la Légende

The first mention of the name Sauveterre dates back to around 1120. The town was built on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Gave d'Oloron. Sauveterre's mission was to defend the southern and western borders of Béarn. The town formed a village organized around the castle. The town was an essential stopover for pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela, as the town is located on the Via Lemovizenis (Vézelay route). The fortified Legend Bridge was built in the 13th century by Gaston VII of Béarn and rebuilt in the 15th century by Gaston Fébus. Originally equipped with a simple wooden deck on stone pillars, the bridge was later reinforced with a tower and a drawbridge.

A second settlement called "Saint-André" therefore arose around this church. The tympanum looks perfect and was restored at the end of the 19th century, when missing parts were probably recreated and inserted. It shows "Christ in Majesty" with the symbols of the four evangelists, sun, moon - and angels

Orthez - Coiffure Loustau

In 2009, I crossed Orthez on foot along the Via Lemovicensis. In medieval times the town was important because it was possible to control the movement of goods on the Gave de Pau river here. In 1242, Gaston VII Moncade, Viscount of Béarn, made Orthez his residence. It was probably at his instigation that the medieval bridge was built, which is still the town's landmark today and which I crossed at the time. Coiffure Loustau

Gargilesse - Hôtel des Artistes

I "discovered" Gargilesse in June 2007, hiking the Via Lemovizenis, which starts in Vezelay. I had stayed in the "Hôtel des Artistes", as it offered an affordable room for the "pelerin". Meanwhile, I had returned a couple of times. The hotel had changed hands, but it is still worth a detour - especially for the restaurant. Bavette à l'échalote

Gargilesse - Saint-Laurent-et-Notre-Dame

Hugues de Naillac, Lord of Gargilesse, returned from a crusade and brought back a statue of the Virgin, whose beneficent protection would have been proven during the fighting. He built for her the church, which is today the parish church of Gargilesse. I "discovered" the wonderful village of Gargilesse in June 2007, hiking the Via Lemovizenis, which starts in Vezelay.
