The oldest foundations of Sainte-Menehould are on a butte, that got fortified in the 11th century. The town that developed on the foothills over the centuries burned down completely in 1719. Notre-Dame-du-Château, built in the 13th century on the butte, overlooks the (rebuilt) town. It was altered and enlarged in the 15th and 18th centuries, but the nave goes back to the early times.
