Grasse, located about 20 km north of Cannes, is considered the world's capital of perfume. In the Middle Ages Grasse was known for leather tanning. When during the 16th century glove-wearing became "en vogue", the gloves got scented, what started the perfume industry.
In 1244 the episcopal seat was relocated from Antibes to Grasse and since then this church was the cathedral of the diocese up to 1790.
The cathedral was rebuilt and remodelled many times over the centuries. The romanesque apse got replaced and in the 18th century even a crypt was added. The cathedral, used for storage during the times of the French Revolution, was severely damaged by a fire in 1795.
The crypt was locked, but I could see the Coquille Saint-Jacques from outside.
