Altorf - Saint-Cyriaque

A benedictian abbey was founded here in 960. The first church of this abbey got consecrated in 974. Pope Leo IX, descendant of the founder, transferred the relics of Saint-Cyriaque toAltdorf, when he still was Count of Egisheim-Dagsburg. During the last decades of the 12th century this first church was replaced by this massive basilica, built from reddish sandstone. The western facade, seen here, has the classical architectoral design of a basilica: a wide central nave under a high roof, flanked by two aisles under lower roofs. The convent in Altorf existed upto the French Revolution - and since then Saint-Cyriaque is a parish church.

The romanesque structure is clearly visible, though the decorations (pulpit, frescoes under the clerestory) are as baroque as the choir. Most of the columns, that flank the nave, have "decorated" bases like this one, that depicts a smiling dog. Or a grinning bear. Or a snarling.. High under the roof are some interesting, pretty unique corbels. There are a number of human heads and faces, likes this one This seems so "modern" in style, like comig directly from the 1920s. If this is an orginal carving dating to the end of the 12tn century, then it the work very gifted artist, who could create a real icon of a face. I like the facial expression. Puzzled? Surprized? Flabbergasted?
