Hallenberg - St. Heribert

06 Jun 2019 157
Benedictine "Abtei Deutz", located at Deutz, now part of Cologne, had property east of today Hallenberg and in the 12th century erected a chapel there dedicated to St. Heribert, the founder of the abbey. Within the 13th century, this farm became the property of the Cologne archbishop, who built the city of Hallenberg as a border fortress against Hesse and Wittgenstein. The patronage of St. Heribert was transferred to the parish church in Hallenberg, built soon after. The worst of a couple of city fires, which severely damaged the church, took place in 1519. The square tower was rebuilt in 1708/09 on the old pedestal. The church is open for visitors, but the nave is closed by a grid, so many interior details that are described are "invisible".
