From a conversation with local historian in Saintes some time ago, I learned that "just around Saintes are more than 200 Romanesque churches". Churches like Saint-Barthélémy in Grandjean (pop ~250), seen here. The Saintonge must have been a huge construction site within the 11th/12th century.
