Robert Louis Stevenson did a 12-day (200-kms) hiking journey through the areas of the Cévennes mountains in 1878. This walking trip formed the basis for "Travels with a Donkey in the Cévennes", that was one of his early publications (1879), years before he became a well known author. "Travels with a Donkey in the Cévennes" may be the first book of what is called "Outdoor Literature" today. As many people today follow Stevenson via the "Chemin Stevenson" (GR70) that starts right here, Le Monastier-sur-Gazeille is known by hikers. I walked the "Chemin Stevenson" in March 2010. I was not aware that early in the year there is still lots of snow in the higher regions and hotels are still closed.
