The castle of Polignac was built on a basalt platform, that is a fragment of an old volcanic flow from the 11th century on.
The fortress occupied a strategic location and could accommodate upto 800 soldiers in addition to the Lord of Polignac`s family.
The castle, that got enlarged in the late 15th and 16th century, was a stronghold for the Royalists during the wars of religion. The Viscounts moved out during the 17th century and later the castle fell into ruins. After the French Revolution the ruins were used as a quarry. It got restored partly during the 19th century.
Today the "Fortresse de Polignac" can be visited and even offers treasure hunts in summer.
