Mont Sainte-Odile

04 Jul 2011 77
Standing on the Mont Sainte-Odile, a 760m peak of the Vosges Mountains, facing east. Overlooking the vast valley of the Rhine. On the horizont, in the far distance, is the Black Forest. Left to this spot is the Hohenburg Abbey, founded by Adalrich, Duke of Alsace in Merovingian times. There are many traces of celtic settlements - and a large fortification called "the Pagan Wall", which is about 10kms long. This wall is not celtic, it is probably merovingian as well. This is what dendrochronologic research found out recently. Mont Sainte-Odile hit the news on 20 January 1992, when an Airbus crashed on a ridge nearby.
